Tarquinio Merula, originally from Cremona, is recognised as one of the most progressive composers of the Venetian School of the early Baroque period. The centrepiece of this evening's concert is his stunning Canzonetta Spirituale sopra alla nanna, sung here by Angela Hicks (The Monteverdi Choir, Fair Oriana). A wonderfully poignant work of birth, love, loss and ultimately death, it is often considered an expression of the life of Mary, the Mother of God, and her unwavering commitment and devotion to her son, Jesus Christ.
